To Sunil Gavaskar and other sachin suppoters:

Sachin Tendulkar Stats

1) Out of the 34 centuries, 11 have come in matches when India has won. So 23 centuries have been wasted.
2) So 11 centuries 1 by 1
a. 165 against England , India won by an innings. Score 560 on a batting wicket NS sidhu also got a century. Anil kumble and raju spun India to victory on a spinning wicket. No pressure on tendulkar, 1st innings century when India were already in a commanding position.
b. 104 vs sri lanka u r talking about. Kambli and sidhu had centuries in the same match. India had a 1st innings lead of 100 and India were ahead by 300 runs before sachin got his century. So I guess that’s no big deal.
c. 142 agst sri lanka. Sidha again had a century in the same match. India won by an innings and some 100 runs. Thanks to the bolwers. Sachin under no pressure…score 142 out of Indias total of 511.
d. 155 vs aus at Chennai…superb knock, saw that live. But ….India were 200 or so for 2 , with sidhu smashing and dravid in pretty decent form. India under no pressure…but yeah I must agree that this contributed to a victory. India might not have won without this knock. so I must say this contributed to a victory. But no pressure……not exactly a crunch situation.
e. 122 Vs Zimbabwe at delhi. Dravid got a 200 in the same match. India were in a brilliant position , no big deal.
f. 126 Vs aus at Chennai. Again saw this match. 126 out of 501. all the top order batsmen got 50s , but then we needed harbhajan singh to win the match for us in the 2nd innings. 126 out of 501, man is it a crunch situation?
g. 176 Vs Zimbabwe. SS DAS and S Bangar got centuries in the same match. 176 out of a total of 570. opposition is Zimbabwe, and make a note of the other century makers.
h. 117 Vs WI at Port of spain. 1st innings century. In the 2nd innings it was laxmans and gangulys 70s that won the match for India. Ofcourse srinath and nehra got the WI for less than 300.
i. 193 vs England at Leeds. 193 out of 670. ganguly and dravid got huge centuries too.bangar got a 67. 1st innings.
j. 194 vs Pak recently. Sehwags test match. Sehwag made 309, paki bolwers were tired and out before sachin even came out to bat. Started his innings at 160 for noloss, and shewag had a 100 more runs before sachin crosees 25 runs.
k. 248 n.o sachins highest in tests. Against Bangladesh. Pretty much signifies sachins contribution to victories against important opposition.

Summary
-------------

1) out of the 11 centuries, one of them- the 155 n.o agast aus at Chennai was pretty high level.
The other 10 centuries satisfied one of the 3 points below
1) Mediocre opposition- Zimbabwe, weak sri lanka , west-indies, bangaladesh.
( 6 out of 10 have been agast weak opposition when India have piled out huge 1st innings totals, when ppl like das and bangar have also got centuries.)
2) two against England when India piled on huge 1st innings totals of 670 and 560 odd. Atleast a couple of other players made centuries. Bolwers spun the opposition out on a spinning track.
3) 1 agt pak when sehwag had already won the match for India.

So Indias highest run getter in tests has come close to contributing to Indias victory once agst Pak ( but only came close..we didn’t win, that’s it) and once agast aus in chennai when he got that 155( which is super, but not totally pressure situation, when u knw u have kumble waiting to spin India to victory).

All the other 10 have been agst
1) weak oppoisiton
2) on batting tracks
3) when some 2-3 other people have already taken the match away from the opposition.

I am a sachin fan too (??) , but when he doesnt contribute to victories no point blindly idolising him.

If you still think Sachin is the worlds best player, drop me a line.

  • well, that seems fair.

But now I will go through an analysis of the matches that he did score in and we didnt win.
So, the 23 wasted centuries -

    The drawn matches-
    1. vs England 1990 in England, (hist first test century) . scored 68 in the 1st innings and 119 in the 2nd. the only other score over 50 was that of manjrekar, so I am guessing Sachin was pretty much holding the innings together.
    2. vs Australia 1991/92 in Australia, The inning where he and ravi shastri took Warne apart. Vengsarkar and manjrekar contributed, so not a crunch situation.
    3. vs SA, 1992/1993 in SA. 1st innings score of 111 (he is the only one to have scored more than 30!!)...again raising India's first innings total to 227 in response to SA's 292...didnt score in the 2nd innings...the other bats saved the test to a draw...here again, he saved our necks in the first innings by scoring a century, while nobody lese did anything...
    4. vs WI 1994/95, in India, good batting pitch, everyone scored, he scored most...nothing much there...
    5. vs England 1996 in England, everybody on both sides scored, nothing much there...
6 vs SL 1997 in SL, the famous 952 match,, everybody scored.
    7. vs SL 1997 in SL, only he and ganguly scored centuries in first innings in response to SL's first innings score of 332 to get ndia to 375, others scored in 2nd innings, good performance, but he and Ganguly got us to a respectable total.
    8. vs SL 1997/1998 in India, again he and ganguly scored centuries in first innings, others scored in 2nd innings. batting 1st, piled on the runs.
    9. vs SL 1998/1999 in SL, everybody scores in all Innings, end of story
    10. vs NZ 1998/99 in India, 1st innings, india all out for 83, NZ score 215 in response, Indi 2nd inning, everybody scores, little bit of pressure, also captain, so more pressure...
    11. vs NZ 1998/99 in India, 2 centuries in 1st innings in additin to Sachins double-century...
    12. vs ZIM 2000/01 in India, everybody scored, end of story
    13. vs Eng 2001/2002 in India, England 4-7 in 1st inn, india - 291 in 2nd innings with 75 and 41 from vvs and ss das. Again lead india to a respectable 1st innings total.
    14. vs WI 2002/2003 in India, India 1st innings - 358, WI 1st inn - 497, india 2nd inni - he scores 176 with VVS scoring 154, match is an easy draw...but only because he and VVS scored so many runs as the other batsmen read 0,10,17,16,27,26 etc...
    15. vs AUS 2003/2004 in Aus, he scored 241, this was his determined comeback innings...again VVS score 178 alongside...

So, according to me, innings 1, 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14 are under pressure. Som under less, some under more. Innings 15, he was personally under pressure and he built the innings around himself.
So 6 (excluding #15) were under a good bit of pressure.

    The lost matches-
    1. vs australia 1991/92. he was the only one who scored more than 50 in the Indian innings (114), bringing India to a respectable 272 in response to 346 fromAustralia. In the 2nd innings the whole batting lineup collapsed despite the good start by srikanth and sidhu. So, was the first innings under pressure, I think so, because he pretty much gave us any chance in the match.
    2. vs England 1996 in England, 1st innings, nobody scored, Srinath was highest with 52, India scored 214 and Eng 313 in reply. In the Indian 2nd innings, he is the only one to have scored over 20!!! Got India a 2nd innings lead of 120, but obviously not enough to save the match. Another innings under pressure.
    3. vs SA 1996/97 in SA, scored 169 in partnership with Azhar to get India to 359 in response to 529 in 1st innings. Again, an innings under pressure. Didnt do anything in 2nd innings, we lost badly.
    4. vs Australia 1997/98 in India , scored 177 with Dravid and Azhar contributing 74 and 40 respectively. 1st innings score, no pressure really...
    5. vs NZ 1998/99 in NZ, scored 47 in 1st innings with Azhar scoring a century to get India to 208. NZ scored 352, he scored 113 in the 2nd innings with contributions of 48 by Gangu and Azhar. not good enough to win the match... This is one match where I would say that he could have scored more to win the match or save it..
    6. vs Pak 1998/99 in India, duck in fist innings, but 2nd innings 136, - familiar story--nobody else score much, only mogia gets to 52, we need 272 to win and are all out for 258. Maybe, Sachin should have won this match for us, but the rest of the top-order reads 5, 0, 10, 7, and 2...Where is the support?
    7. vs Australia 1999 in Australia, aus 1st inn - 405, sachin score 116, the only batsman over 50, india get to 238. India set 376 to win in 2nd inn, again scores 50, with Kanitkar at 45 the only other notable contribution...nobody else is capable of hitting a century???
    8. vs SA 01/02 in SA, Sachin and Sehwag score hunders with VVS and Dasgupta scoring 30's in India 1st inn of 379. SA score 563 in response...No pressure in 1st innings and nobody makes a big score in the 2nd innings...

Here, innings 1,2,3, 5, 6, 7,8 are all under tremendous pressure. We dont win any of those because nobody else contributes. The only ones I can really say that he could have done better are 5 and 6 which were within winning distance.
So, 7 out of 8 are under pressure, its just that everyone else crumbles.
Test matches are never won by one person alone. If you look at Steve Waugh's record, most of the times that he has scored centuries, there have been middle-big scores around him...The only thing I must say that he is better than Sachin is that he is always there till the end, so many of his innings are not outs...but even then waugh only has 2 centuries in the 2nd innings as opposed to sachin's 9 out of which we won 2 and lost 3.

So, out of the 23, (7 + 6 ) 13 are under pressure which I must say are the mark of a great batsman. he may not be the greatest, but he is great. Its just that the expectations are too high!!!
